Members of the 179th Airlift Wing take their children on a tour of the base in Mansfield, OH, Apr. 23, 2015. Along with spending a day with their parents at work, the kids also get a tour of different sections and learn about the overall mission of the installation.

April 23rd is National "Take Your Daughter and Son to Work" day and the 179th participates with several events throughout the day to entertain and educate the children about the Air Force. The children get to spend the day seeing what it's like to be in the military and what their parents do all day. They get to experience using night vision googles and air crew gear, sit in the pilot's seat on a C130, wear firefighting gear, use a fire hose, sit in fire trucks, and spend some time with Security Forces. The Honor Guard performed a Flag ceremony, teaching the kids about the different versions of the national flag and 179th Medical Group animated medical emergencies with their Medi-man, a training mannequin. 200 RED HORSE set a heavy equipment display for the kids to see. They were able to climb in and out of bulldozers, dump trucks and take Humvees rides.

The national day is designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program goes beyond the average practice of "shadowing" an adult. Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives does during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future, and allowing them to begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success
