The 179th Airlift Wing has again made its mark in history by being the first unit to receive the coveted Alan P. Tappan Award three consecutive years on May 13, 2010 at the Annual Ohio Air National Guard Awards Banquet. This annual event, hosted in Toledo, Ohio, celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of Ohio Air National Guard men and women; and the caliber of 179th Airlift Wing members was once-again quite evident throughout the evening.
Ohio Air National Guard Command Chief Master Sgt., Chief Master Sgt. Tamara Phillips, began the evening by recognizing the "Best-of-the-Best" who were recipients of the 2010 Ohio ANG Airman of the Year awards. Of the six outstanding Airmen she recognized, four are members of the 179th Airlift Wing. These award recipients included: Staff Sgt. Michael Swick, Honor Guard Member of the Year; Master Sgt. Heidi Bunker, First Sgt. of the Year; Master Sgt. Richard Brenly, Senior NCO of the Year; and Master Sgt. Brian Owens, NCO of the Year.
The unsurpassed excellence of the men and women serving at the 179th Airlift Wing led to our unit receiving three unit awards: Public Affairs Newsletter, Mission Readiness and Alan P. Tappan. The Public Affairs Newsletter Award is based off a units overall newsletter purpose, target audience and quantifiable results. The Mission Readiness Award hinges off a units effective staffing, individual readiness, war readiness training effectiveness and mission capable index statistics. Lastly, the prestigious Alan P. Tappan Award is decided based off a units outstanding performance with their manning, retention, diversity, fitness rating, on-the-job training effectiveness and professional military education compliance being rated by the selection board. To receive all of these awards is quite an accomplishment and a direct reflection of 179th member's unprecedented hard word, dedication, capabilities and winning "can-do" attitudes.
"I am truly amazed by the continuous excellence exhibited by all of you every day. Thanks for all of your work, and let's continue to show the rest of the State of Ohio and the ANG why the 179th is the best!" said Col. Gregory N. Schnulo, 179th Airlift Wing Commander.
